A story today on commericialappeal.com and myfoxmemphis.com covered a press conference held jointly by Memphis City Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash, Southern Christian Leadership Conference head Rev. Dwight Montgomery and representatives from the Memphis Baptist Ministerial Association, including Rev. Roosevelt Joyner.

These individuals all expressed concern for students in the school system as a whole but also for several schools in danger of state takeover.
“If one school has 10 students that need help in science, we’ll need to find 10 to help them,” Montgomery said.

Tutoring is well and good and if that’s how adults inspired by this call to action want to help, wonderful. In addition to the surface issue of grades and test scores are the issues involved in helping youth develop a sense of pride in themselves, a sense of how to interact with others in our community and a value system to help them become the citizens we want to live with in Memphis.

Believe it or not, helping a young person to develop these things is not hard. They happen through small steps and individual teaching moments that a caring adult can provide as a mentor.

The challenge has been issued by these leaders to individuals in the community at large, but the challenge is also there for Memphis area organizations to assess their ability to help. The Grizzlies Foundation is here to be the first step for any individual or organization interested in simply learning more about opportunities and how mentoring works.

Lastly though, the challenge is also on these leaders to follow through on their call to action-to encourage their networks of family, friends and congregation members to step up as well. Congregations interested in learning how they can do their part can contact the Grizzlies Foundation also.
